Week 3, 4, 5 and 6 Grocery Bill Analysis

Latest CSA Veggies
Welcome back to the thirdfourthfifthsixth week of Grocery Bill Analysis!

After an unexpected hiatus, I am back. So sorry for the huge gap from the last time I posted but work has been very busy and my little Texstralian boys have been keeping me very busy at home! Plus, Country Bloke is working at a feverish pace to get the split rail garden fence built by the time fall comes around. Not to mention the deck, garden, etc...

I like to refer to these issues as "First World Problems".

So the blog has taken a back burner to life. I'm sure ya’ll know the feeling.

BUT, I have been keeping up with my grocery bill analysis over the past few weeks because I do plan on seeing this thing through. AND, since I’ve started this self-challenge, I have officially completed one month!

Here are the stats:

July 15 – August 15 month total $421.73
July 15 – August 15 weekly total ($421.73/4 weeks) $105.43
Goal spending per week $100
Missed goal by $5.43 a week!!

Dadgum!! (Sorry been watching too much Cars!) Oh well, I get it next month. Not bad though considering when I started, I was spending $136 a week before I startedthis.

I did some further analysis on my grocery bill for 2012, which totaled around $7,300. That's an average of about $140 a week. Now I have more people in the house and two growing boys but I'm managing to keep my costs down by instituting three changes in my shopping habits:

1)      Once a week, dedicated grocery day

2)     Sticking to "The List"

3)     Setting a goal of spending $100 a week or $5,200 a year. (That’s MUCH better than last year!)

I know some of you are probably thinking, "she just figured out it's smart to shop on the same day of the week? I've been doing that for YEARS!"

It takes a little while for the light bulb to go on in my head sometimes. My kids usually turn it off which hampers any good ideas most of the time. I guess it's just the absent-mindness that comes with the mommy territory.

Surprisingly, I am really enjoying the weekly grocery trip. I thought I would hate it since I loathe shopping but when I was grocery shopping every two weeks, I swear survival mode would kick in and I would be cleaning shelves of food and household items like the zombie apocalypse was upon us that would, of course, take us months to use. I was always thinking, "It'll be weeeeeeeeeks before I make it back here!"

Remember how I posted earlier about switching my grocery shopping days to Thursdays because my store closed on Tuesdays? Well, I've got to tell you, I DO NOT like to shop on Thursdays. Don't ask me why but I was thrilled to learn that my grocery store had opened their doors back up on Tuesdays. Even Country Bloke asked if I could change my day up because he didn't like Thursdays either! Isn't it funny how performing certain chores and tasks on different days can mess up with flow of your life?! Lol. Weird.

I think for us it was because we picked up our vegetables on Fridays from our CSA and since we never know exactly what we are getting, we might be short on something all weekend long. Now that the day is back to Tuesday, it's almost the middle day between Fridays so I can stock up on what we are missing. I don't know if I just explained my reasoning very well but it makes sense in my head!

"The List" is another great tool. We've always had a list. I'm sort of a list maker. Drives Country Bloke crazy. But IT WORKS. If you grab the last of the toilet paper, PUT IT ON THE LIST. If you use the last of the sour cream, PUT IT ON THE LIST. If you grab that last milk out of the refrigerator in the basement, PUT IT ON THE LIST. You catch my drift. Seriously though, if you take a list with you and stick with it, you'll find you are only buying about 15 to 20 items every week totaling between $80 to $110 and you can still eat steak, fish, chicken and the other "good stuff". Try it for a month. See if it works for you like it does for me!
